Hey Tee,

What a wonderful idea!  I'd love to hear how this progresses, and also is there any room in the community? :)

So we originally started out with the idea to create an aquaponics system for our homeschool group.  But the idea has now evolved.  My nephew is in HI as an intern at Friendly's and we have gathered with some other like minded people from across the country and we are creating an aquaponics, sustainable community with a mind, body, spirit healing center and education center on a ranch located in the foothills.  We are definitely excited about the transition in ideas and how it has all grown over the past several months.  I would love to get any ideas and advice on the systems to install for the aquaponics.  We are looking at greenhouses and uses of other buildings on the property.  There are several existing ponds on the property and there are thoughts to somehow incorporate a few of those.  We will be supporting not only the residences in the community but locally provide food through a CSA membership and also to local food banks. I know many of you have had thoughts in this direction and/or are on your way to doing something commercially around the area.  We feel very strongly in collaboration and would love any input and/or thoughts on how we can help each other make each of our aquaponics visions a reality.

With gratitude, Tee

What an awesome, crazy idea, Nick!  My first concern would be for reliable power - what would be your source for 24/7 power in the bus?  You might want to put this up as a general forum topic for the larger group to get more input.  This is beyond a Colorado idea!

I know this is a really farfetched question, but.... Do any of you think it would be possible to have a small aquaponics system in a converted school bus?  I realize that the fish get easily stressed out when they are in transport in the back of a vehicle.  Is there any way around that?

The reason I ask is because me and my partner are going to start up a non-profit in the front-range area, with a converted school bus/mobile green house that showcases sustainable technologies formed permaculturally, and travel to school districts educating the youth about healthy, organic food, urban farming, and sustainable technologies amongst many other things.

Also, any input or support is welcomed!  Thanks ya'll

Thanks for the time you spent looking into that tour, Tawnya.  Maybe they will eventually get insurance and we can revisit the visit!

Hi fellow Colorado Aquapons-

In December Sylvia had posted a suggested visit to an aquaponics facility in Ft Lupon. I know the family that runs it and was hoping to get us a tour. Unfortunately, they don't carry liability insurance at this time and have been advised to strickly limit guests. Since they are a commercial production environment they have to be cautious which is understandable.

The great news is that their aquaponics business is going well and they are selling a lot of food to a CSA in Ft. Collins area. Its very exciting to have a viable aquaponics business operating in Colorado. We will continue the dialog with them and hopefully tours will be available in the future. Stay tuned.
