should i partially cover the tank and sumps with insulation?

also wondering if anyone can share info on avoiding too much humidity in the cold months? simply open up windows when temps allow?

Anyone on the front range doing a hobby system in a greenhouse year round? I am looking for ideas to control humidity, especially on the cold winter days when I can not open things up. The condensation is starting to cause issues.

I'm building my first system, and am having difficulty sourcing the 6" PVC pipe for media guards. Is there someplace that carries it in stock and sells retail? Thanks.

One of the most important items to consider is Dissolved Oxygen and Tank Loading in your fish tank :-) Especially at higher elevations. You overload a tank’s dissolved oxygen supply and you will experience a fish die off back to the number of fish that can be supported by the dissolved oxygen in that tank.

A couple times a day I check dissolved oxygen with one of these meters: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Milwaukee-MW600-Dissolved-Oxygen-DO-Meter-SM600-NEW-/270569137030?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3eff2d6386#ht_768wt_1163

(apologies for any cross posts on the aquaponic associate site, but i figured the best place to start would be with this colorado group...which i found after the fact)

my initial thought is to build an insulated 'room' within the garage for the system (mainly for the winter). the garage is not insulated. there are 2 vents that i could hook up fans to better circulate the air (mainly in the summer) if needed.

i'm sure some type of space heater/tank heater could be incorporated if the costs of running them weren't too bad. i was thinking of using a 100 gallon stock tank, media-based flood and drain system. i'm also curious if anyone had specific suggestions on insulation and what the best heating method would be? perhaps additional water storage to help regulate temps better? would i also need to consider a chiller for the summer (would start with tilapia)?

any personal experiences, thoughts, or suggestions would be appreciated! i don't want to start in the garage if it will be destined to fail come winter (or even summer) ;(

thanks for your time

Hi Colorado Aquapons,

I am helping organize this year's Aquaponics Association Conference which will be held in Denver the weekend of September 21st. As with the last conference, we are intending to feature some aquaponics systems in the area for conference attendees to tour on Friday the 21st. We expect to have over 350 attendees this year and are arranging for buses to take people to different sites. If you are interested in showing off your system please respond with the following information below. The conference committee will review all of the information and logistics and inform you of whether or not we can include your system on the tour.

Also, it will likely be the case that up to 30 people at a time would be touring your system and arriving on a bus. To that end, please think about whether or not that is something you can reasonably accommodate. For example, if you have a 50 gallon aquarium system in your apartment, it's probably not going to be worthwhile for the tour to stop there. No offense, but we have to draw the line somewhere. We are looking for exciting new systems, innovations, farm operations, community and commercial systems etc... If you are doing creative things with renewable energy that would be great, too. We would like to show off the diversity and creativity of aquaponics systems in our state as much as possible. We are also trying to keep the traveling distance within the Denver/Boulder area so I apologize for those of you further away, but we won't be able to travel beyond 45 minutes or so from downtown Denver.

If you are interested in participating, please respond with...

- Photo(s) of your system

- Basic description of your system and environment (ie. greenhouse, outdoors, basement etc...)

- How long your system has been running

- City (I don't need a specific address right now, just general location)

- Future system plans that might be completed in time for the conference
trout sources in southern Colorado?tag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2012-02-02:4778851:Topic:2872072012-02-02T15:44:15.389ZCindy Yhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/CindyYandell

Does anybody know of any fisheries near Colorado Springs or Pueblo that will sell small quantities of trout to individuals?

I've been to Liley Fisheries in Boulder twice, and they are awesome, but the 4-hour round trip is a killer - mostly going through Denver is a nightmare.

I picked up 50 trout from them yesterday, then when I was almost home, took a turn too sharply and dumped all of my trout and water in the bed of the truck! That's another story entirely. Needless to say, after several hours on the road, I was pretty discouraged. I was going to give up on trout just because of the hassle of picking them up, but I thought I would check and see if anybody knows of any that might be closer to us. Denver is good, too, but I figured if I said "near Denver," that would include Boulder, and I've decided that's just too far. :-(

I was just wondering how much of a concern humidity is for indoor aquaponic systems in Colorado. Do you all find you need a dehumidifier? I would think that some extra moisture in the house might actually be a nice thing. I'm looking at putting the system in my basement. It is mostly finished basement with one unfinished room about 11X15 feet which is where I want to put it. I was looking at either a 1 or possibly 3 IBC tote system.

Thoughts or recommendations?

I know these aren't native to our state, but if grubs are placed in a greenhouse, will the adult flys create their own new colony? I know they aren't good at flying, so I figure if they are stuck inside the greenhouse with a ready food supply for their larvae they might stick around. Does anyone have any experience with this? Or maybe a resource a might look at. They look tasty, and I want to feed them to my fish. (I might try a few too :))
