Media Mass

I'm curious if anyone has any idea whether having a high-mass media like gravel is better than a low-mass media like clay pellets, from a thermal perspective.  

Any thoughts?

Gravel would have greater thermal mass since it has less air in it than clay.

Right.  Very true.  Do you have any idea if that's a good thing, or if it matters?

The porous quality of the clay would play host to beneficial bacteria much better than gravel because it has more biological surface area.
