Nitrite spike

I have since last Wed gotten a Nitrite spike, rising from less than .15 ppm to 3 ppm.  I think it may be due to over feeding, although I don't find much food residue on the bottom of the tank.  Not…Continue

In big tanks (600 + gallons) I've been able to grow out from catfish fingerlings to edible size in less than a year.  That would be with good water quality and fairly heavy feeding in our warm waters here in Central FL.  In a full year I usually expect the catfish to be over 3 lb.

There are only two catfish in my tank and after 10 months from fingerling size they are beginning to look quite large compared to the bluegill - they look like nurse sharks down on the bottom.  I suspect the food to flesh ratio is rather high for the catfish.  I'm looking forward to trying my first aquaponic catfish but will probably wait until spring to harvest them.

I used live mullet for bait on a recent fishing trip and brought a few home afterwards, filleted, skinned, diced them.  I dropped some in the fish tank and the bluegill really went for them but very soon the catfish came off the bottom and took over the feeding.  I'd never seen them up off the bottom like that for food.  I'll definitely bring mullet home when it's convenient to do so.  It's a bit of trouble but seems to be a treat and it may get some minerals in the system which wouldn't otherwise be there.  regards.

Does anyone have a source for catfish fingerlings in Northern California?

Thanks Sahib Punjabi, I'm still waiting to hear back from Florida Fish Farms. I need to see if they ship, I'm about four hours away.

Hello John,

The last time I purchased Channel Catfish fingerlings, I believe I paid $30.00 for 100, thus cost 30c each. I believe Blue Gils were the same or maybe $10.00 more. Not sure if this price is valid for "out of breading season".

I would call Florida Fish and find out :-)

@John Berry - I just sent you a PM with a link to free catfish,  I did not notice you live in Florida.  Sorry my bad.

Hello all, new the subject and I'm in the process of building a system. I'm looking for channel cat fingerlings. I consider myself somewhat internet savvy, but feel like I would have an easier time locating weapons grade plutonium online. I live in south florida. Found one place locally that is charging $2 per fingerling for an order of 50. Is that reasonable? If not, does anyone know any other hatcheries that you could recommend? Dunn does not ship to Florida.

I was thinking about using a sump tank just to keep the level in the fish tank from going up and down.  thanks for the advice I'll try and post some pic when I get it together.

You can only do the 2:1 grow bed to fish tank ratio if you have a sump tank or some other means to moderate water level fluctuations.

If you go with the 1:1, then you simply have to grow less fish since you will have less grow bed and your fish tank water level with fluctuate.  Base the number of fish on the amount of filtation you have and a 1:1 ratio is fine.
