California Aquaponics

Had the great pleasure of meeting a fellow CA Aquapon, Andy from Santa Barbara. Got me to thinking we shouldn't be left out. There is a Florida and Colorado group so there has to be one from CA. Besides we can share links, ideas and suppliers

Hey there! I'll be setting up a new system in my backyard in Oakland soon. I am wondering if anyone here is in Oakland and already has a system set up-- I'd love to come visit, trade seeds, talk shop, etc. I just moved back from Honolulu where I had an amazing little IBC set up for about a year-- I miss my tons of veggies and many many tilapia fry.

It's less about cleaning than absorption into the polyethylene.  In my case the label makes it perfectly clear that the poison is absorbed, and that even the act of cutting the polyethylene drums will release toxins.

So I'm suggesting that the contents of any container should be known and the chemical hazards should be understood. This can be quite difficult as most of us are not chemists.  So unless the contents are something simple like fruit juice, I'm going to question the safety.

It's kind of ironic.  Some of the barrels I picked up contained DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid).  I thought these might have to be discarded, but it turns out this is a non-toxic substance made from synthetic urea.  It's the soap containers that turned out to be toxic.

Fish well Ventura county is strict I haven't decided.

My neighbors are curious my Wife is ticked. Tried to explain but said she understood, until they showed up.

From the 5 IBC's I have 5 grow beads 1 sump tank and 2 full size Fish Tanks.

2 Pumps in the sump.

I have moved the make shift system that already cycled to flow through the new system, wondering if the new system will grow from that or recycle.

I recently picked up a truck load of plastic drums for free.  They contained soap so I thought 'that's got to be okay' - right?  It's soap after all.

Well after I got them home I started reading the labels.  Poison, do not try to clean, do not cut,  do not reuse!   Yikes, now I'm stuck with a load of HAZMAT containers.

My point is don't take the previous contents lightly.  The world is full of nasty stuff and even some of the most benign sounding products can be deadly.

Think my neighbors and family would kill me if I had 5 IBC's.  What was in there that is making this extra difficult? Design plan or layout for your 5? how about kind of fish?

30 hours of cleaning 5 IBC's and still at it. No wonder they were 18.00 each. The seller said "just water blast it" well scraping seams to work better. There is going to be a time when it will be good enough

My name is Gerald Bush we are converting our Riverside County track house into an urban farm with gardens front and back, greenhouse and tilapia. The tanks have been in since November. So far we are having amazing results.

I am interested in sharing my experiences and learning from others.
