Here's the MSDS for the Tetra Pond AquaSafe.

The only thing of interest I could find in it was mention that it contains 2.5-10% of EDTA Disodium Salt which is a chelating agent for metal ions.

I wonder what other ingredients it has in it to do the chlorine and chloramine removal.

I don't know what those chemicals are.   Someone who knows more than me needs to weigh in on this.

According to my brother, without a lot of research,

chelating compound removes the heavy metals

sodium hydroxymethane sulfinate removes the chlorine and chloramines

polyvinylpyrrolidones protects the fish from the other chemicals

organic colloids is a water clarifier

again this is off the top of his head and not researched info

thanks Scott, good info!

When I do my water changes I've been adding water treated with something like Nutrafin Aqua+ to remove the Chlorine and also to help protect the slime coat on my goldfish.  I haven't noticed a problem with the plants in the system while using it and the fish certainly seem to like it.  Right after I put my goldfish in the system he started to get attacked by a fungus of some sort, so I took him out, medicated him and then once recovered put him back in.  He had significant damage to his fins and scales that showed up as black patches and over time, with the Aqua+ he has made a full recovery and turned gold again.  How does your system respond to the Pond AquaSafe?

I am using "Tetra Pond Aquasafe" I haven't noticed any difference with my plants or fish as I have made it a practice to boil off chlorine before adding. I have also been on a strong drive to lower my PH, which I had ignored for to long. I have gone from 8.2 to 7.0 and am targeting 6.5-7.0 as my norm.

My mini-system turned acid when I wasn't paying attention.  The pH dropped to around 6.0 and the fish seemed to suffer.  That was part of the problem when I lost my original goldfish, but I had wildly fluctuating levels of every reading at the time.  That is the difficulty with our system, only 100 gallons and not enough filter media.  I finally just figured I needed to do regular water changes instead of expect plants to soak up all the nutrients.  I imagine your system will eventually start dropping in pH, that was my experience and that seems to be commonly reported from other people too.

One of the problems of a large system(i.e. my 1400 Gallons) is that it takes a much larger dose of acid. I have been adding 4-6 oz of 14.5% Muriatic acid to a 44 gallon mixing barrel which then slowly feeds into my 200 gallon sump which pumps continuously to my 220 and 700 Gallon FTs.

This paradigm provides acid in the amount of 4-6/44/200/900 or  .0000005-.00000075 oz per gal.

My grow beds are fed 15 minutes/hour from my 700 gallon Tilapia FT and the grow bed output is back to the sump. This further dilutes the acid further by changing the 900 to 1200, which just for grins gives 4-6/44/200/1200   .00000038-.00000057 oz per gal.

I hope this isn't a 2nd senior moment
