aquaponics and chlorimene

Anyone out there know how to get the chlorimene out of the city water for aquaponics?

You can put Zip drops in it to pre-treat it or simply aerate the water for at least 24 hours. What remains will be ammonia. Chloramine is chlorine bonded to ammonia.

Sorry David but simply aerating the water for 24 hours might take care of chlorine but it won't take care of the Chloramine.

I believe it takes more like 3 weeks to get rid of chloramine by aerating it and that does better when there is UV light to help break the ammonia chlorine bond.

Activated carbon can take care of chloramine but most filters don't have a long enough resident time to effectively deal with all the chloramine.

ProLine® Dechlorinator, Sodium Thiosulfate

will work but as David says, when you use it you will have ammonia left over in the water but if you are fishless cycling that isn't such a bad thing.

An interesting bit of info from Wikipedia

"SFPUC determined that 1000 mg of Vitamin C (tablets purchased in a grocery store, crushed and mixed in with the bath water) remove chloramine completely in a medium size bathtub without significantly depressing pH."
