Your plant roots find the water in the soil that comes from the coir that comes from the water reservoir, your never going to believe until you build one yourself! If you want some success go to the wicking bed growers group.
@Bob - Nice photos.
@Matt - Keeping the outlet clear is important, so covering the outlet with rocks and using the screen or weed cloth is a good idea.
Below are some pictures of my construction. This tank is made of plywood and fiberglass. In this photo I'm testing for leaks. An arrow points at the outlet bulkhead.
I placed perforated drain pipe in the bottom to increase the water reservoir capacity and I used sand, but I like the lava rock that Bob used because it would drain even better. I used straw between the sand and soil.
Bob,
Why do you put sand or lava at the bottom where the water goes? Is that so the water distributes on every inch of the bed? Why do you use such a large fill tube? I guess because that is the size pipe you use under the sand? Do you make your own holes or are they there when you buy the pipe for the water to drain out?
David, is this directed to me or Bob campbell

I like your design, its a little different from mine. Are these beds running continuous? Are there multiple beds plumbed together? Im going to be building my first ibc tote wick bed and am thinking of trying your design.
