Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hey People!

My name is Joe Martino. I am a student at the Evergreen State College and am involved in a project to build a passive solar greenhouse that would house an aquaponics system on campus. My goal is to talk to Washington state AP enthusiasts to get a sense for the number and size of WA AP projects both public and private, and the economical viability of these systems. Essentially, I am examining the development of systems, and what would be required to make this method of food production more wide spread.

Our own current project is on the move! We will be meeting with an engineer soon to lay out our design dictations, and we are currently brainstorming what the layout of our system would look like. We plan to focus on media bed based production, with the added bonus of installing some NFT tubes.

If you would like to know more about myself and the project before contacting me, please feel free to visit our project website, www.foodforgenerations.com.

I look forward to meeting you.

Joe

Also, from what I see here, there is already a NW AP group! This is wonderful! How do I link up with them?

Your total design depends on your heat source.  You can build the most expensive gh and use the word Green allot but not enough heat and you have problems.

Building a gh and aq are easy.  What's your Green energy plan?  That's the hardest part of the project.

I went with building the gh on the south side of an insulated wall that is the end wall of another bldg.

For energy I'm going with a  gasifier to run an engine with electric generator.  The gasifier produces usable heat and the engine produces usable heat and electric (water jacket and exhaust gas with heat exchanger).

I'm just about done to run so I'll post pics at your web site.

Hello Joe,

How is your evergreen project going? I had project with evergreen interns about 2 years ago - one of them being large aquaponics system in downtown Olympia.

Would you meet and chat about AP? I'm in Olympia as well.

Cliff, I would love to meet to talk about AP. Any day of the week after five or any time over the weekends. It would also be a wonderful experience for me to discuss your experience with Evergreen interns, the Evergreen process, and what you guys put together. The Evergreen Project is going fairly well. We have a greenhouse design and AP design that we are working with. We are having some trouble putting together a plan for what the interior (the AP system) is going to look like as we have some spacial constraints.

Let me know when a good time to meet and talk works for you.

Thanks Cliff!

Jim,

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond, I think you make a great point about the heat sources effect on total design. We are working to build a passive solar greenhouse. Our research shows that this severely mitigates external heating requirements, however we are looking into the installation of radiant floor heating systems a little further down the road. We've also talked to a number of people about hooking in PV arrays in the future, but as mentioned, that seems like a future aspect of the project. Hope you are well, how is your AP/gasifier working?

Joe

Hello Jos,

Good to hear from you.  How about tomorrow or Thursday evening? I can meet you any where in Olympia. Are you in west side? Reply  email to my private account at clncl98506@gmail.com. We will setup time/place offline.
