Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Anyone out there raising trout?  I wonder what you feed?  I am only familiar with the Purina Aquamax carnivore and have trouble finding it. Any source suggestions are appreciated.

Check your states co-operative extension.  Many states that have their own hatcheries my also be able to provide info.  When I was at a hatchery we used Silver Cup as well as our own experimental feeds.  Generally the feed was all the same for all of our trout breeds.

I've been successful raising trout in my aquaponics greenhouse at 10,000ft in CO. I ordered the Aquamax food from a place selling it on ebay - cost a lot for shipping though!. I got them at 5"-6" and just harvested 15 of them at 10-13" after 5 months - I was pretty happy with the growth rate. Flavor is excellent, and the survived and grew quickly at temperatures of 64F-34F before the greenhouse finally dropped below freezing and I decided to harvest everything and start again in a couple of months.

Thanks, I was able to get aquamax 500 at a local feed store.  My problem was in getting the 300 mail order kills you on shipping. Mine have gtown well also. They are in my basement, goth them 21/2 months ago at 5 inches and most are now 7 or so and growing well. I plan to inatall a larger outdoor system in the spring.

Michael,

I have desired to raise trout indoors since I got the aquaponics bug. I am curious about your environmental setup for trout. What temperatures do you maintain in your fish tank? What have been your extremes? Do you use some sort of chiller? For me, I think I could handle trout temperatures easily in the winter, but I would have a very difficult time keeping them cool in the summer.

Thanks!
