<p>Thanks for the tips. I do have a wick made out of a cut up towel in one cup. It seems to work well. And it has collected a lot of the gunk. Which means what you said is right, i do need a solids filtration. I will get on that. Thanks again</p>

Yes all wet surfaces in a system act as surface area for the bacteria but in NFT it is rarely enough to support much fish and without a solids filter, the roots of your plants are likely to get gunked up too which will cause them to suffer. You might want to look into making a bucket or bin type bio-filter that you place on a shelf up just before the start of your fist pipe. Then you pump up into the bottom of that bio-filter and the water will flow out of that into your pipes and it will help you a lot here in the near future.<br/>
