A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi everyone, I'm new to the community, I live in the lakes region of NH, working on a couple systems one small raft system, but more importantly an IBC eb and flo.for this coming spring. I'm debating what fish to use. My dilema that I have access to great local farm raised trout. but I worry that during the hot summer months my tank will be too warm for the trout, and I really dont want to stress the fish. Has anyone had good luck with trout in an IBC system with similar climates? Thanks for any feedback. -Garrett

Your mean temp is 71°F at it's hottest. Given you have a fair amount of volume in your system with a good amount of insulation for both cold and heat, your system should only rise and fall a couple of degrees on any one day. You should be right in the sweet spot for Trout. Also in the colder months your will have to heat your water far less with Trout.

Thanks Jonathan, I appreciate the feedback. Thats good news, I have a trout source about 20 minutes from my house. I look forward to getting started.

I raise both here at 1200 feet in West Va.  The answer is... depends.  You can raise trout up into the very low 70s if you keep the air pump on full blast.  The problem with warm water is that it doesn't hold as much oxygen as cold water.  So the trout suffer.  The problem with tilapia is that they suck outdoors in your region.  I have to bring mine in.  Consider native bluegill species, yellow perch(I really don't like these personally), koi, goldfish.  You live in a temperate area, so choose a temperate fish.

Another option is to use your tank in the cold months just to hold your fresh fish.  You can harvest on demand.

Thanks Matthew, This will deffinately be a test season. I'm temped to try both as well, maybe indoor and outdoor, then I'd have the flexabilty to work more with the seasons, we'll see. I appreciate your feedback, I'm with you, I dont really have any interest in harvesting perch. Assuming I was able to keep the water right around 70...would you consider trout and tilapia in the same tank? or is that just bad practice?

I Iike the idea harvesting on demand.
