I use nothing around my copper probe with no problems I do not have it touching any medal at all I drilled a hole in the wood holding the heater and run the probe through the wood into the water, I have got 3 300 gal tanks with no troubles sorry about your goldfish but you will not build a better heater that will last long term like this one, I try to put as much detail as I can in my videos, but if you have trouble call my number is on the video good luck <br></br><br></br><cite>Randall Wimbish…</cite>

Just get a Therostat with a 4 ft probe to read water temp and it will work fine, if you can't fine one call me I can send you one good luck
