The best biofilter for NFT

I was wondering, how can I make the best biofilter for my NFT aquaponics system? Any ideas and tips would be much appreciated.

I don't have NFT but do believe that a media bed would make a good one, possibly with a polisher too, such as Rob Nash uses.
