Other than how much it cost me to heat my 8x10 greenhouse all went well with the arctic blast. I just got last months electric bill (which didn't include the extreme cold) and was shocked. I don't think the water heating was a big expense and I couldn't be happier with my heater. I'll be turning off the space heater. I have a wood burner that I need to set up. Never used it before so we'll see. Sounds like we're on the same page for tank use. My in ground is for growing fish and the above…

Never used it before so we'll see. Sounds like we're on the same page for tank use. My in ground is for growing fish and the above ground will be for fingerlings and surplus water. I have a "birthing tank" for brooding females, a 30 gallon plastic tote that I drain and fill as I need to use it. I'm setting up aquariums in my house and basement to monitor the babies until they are ready to transfer to the larger tanks. Already have my first litter of about 200-300. Would be more than happy to keep in touch and compare notes.

Matt Kobal said:

What size greenhouse do you have? How did things fare for your greenhouse during the extreme cold weather last week?

My design includes burying two IBC totes in the ground about half way which will be used as sump tanks/fish tanks. However, I will have another IBC tank above ground used as the main fish tank and highest water level point of the system. I am looking at several different methods of heating water but it concerns me how much power consumption it will take.

Jeff Sullivan said:

Got all my education from YouTube so it's learn as I go. I have 4 female and 1 male Tilapia that have started reproducing. Best I've come up with so far is planting my IBC halfway in the ground, insulated, and use a home made tank heater made with a 1500 watt hot water tank element. My next move will be to add another tank that will be fed from the grow bed and drain back into the in ground tank that I will put my fingerlings in as they grow.

Yes... I hope to be able to maintain a year round system, so I will have to figure out a better heating system than my current space heater - which is able to keep things above freezing, but struggles during the real cold snaps. I really want the greenhouse to maximize its passive solar capabilities and use as little fossil fuel as possible, but that is a ways out.

Hopefully there are others that want to show off their system and you could join me for the tour.

Kathy…
