Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I went to the local pet store today to buy some rosy reds (fat-head minnows). They only had 7 fish on hand so i bought 50  'shiners' I have no idea which species thees fish are, but I added 50 to my pond.

If in the future i decide to let these minnows become food for whatever fish I decide to add to my pond, that would be fine. However, I am thinking of maintaining the pond as a minnow (possibly breeding ) pond.

Anybody here raise fish as a baitfish for profit rather than just food for whatever food fish they are raising

I don't but I have a question about Fatheads - do they lay eggs or give live birth?

My plan is to raise gambusia in a separate tank, not necessarily for profit.  Gambusia give live birth and I know they're prolific in the wild.

The minnow I've considered raising for profit is mud minnows.  They can tolerate very low salinity, so possibly they could be raised in a lightly salted aquaponics system.  For saltwater fishing in the Southern U.S., this is a great bait.

i did not know what a gambusia was. never heard of them, but had heard of mosquito fish. I just assumed mosquito fish was a common name for any minnow...

Where would I find a few gambusia to try?

I plan to find some in the wild and trap them.

rosyred (or fathead) minnows lay eggs.. the male takes care of them using his "fat head" to keep the eggs clean

some "shiner" minnows are open water spawners,  and won't reproduce in a pond/tank..(emerals shiners are used around here for bait, and won't reproduce in a small bow)
i've had a couple of successful rosy red minnow hatches, using 4" and 6" clay pots for them to lay eggs on/in..

I'm thinking my shiners are 'golden'...... not sure how they are diferentiated.  or if that is true. I am basing that on what I see are available locally  (within the state) from breeders. They mention fat-head minnows but as far as shiners are concerned only the golden shiner.

I found one dead shiner two days ago and another today. Then later I saw a school of minnows swimming around plus a few solitary fish.

Does anybody here know if minnows of different species school together? I have what I think is golden shiners and fat-head minnow.s.
