Can you plant seeds, carrots, lettuce etc. in a gravel bed flood and drain system? Seems as though the seeds would sink to far into the media.

you can plant them directly in the gravel..
i also tried a strip of papertowel (folded over seeds) buried an inch or so in the gravel, both worked fine
Yes. It's less trouble than doing it any other way. Put several seeds down and one or two usually work out.
Has anyone had sucess growing carrots?
i've grown quite a few carrots, but had problems with aphids a couple of times.. just put in another batch
I planted carrot and radish seeds in the gravel and nothing has grown that I can see. I dropped several seeds on the sponge I use to filter the water and they are growing great. I think these fine seeds work they way to far down into the media to grow using the flood and drain. I going to try a constant flood in media in one bed to see if that makes a difference. I planted corn directly into the flood and drain and they are growing fine. Who knows! Tom

It can be done from what I have seen and read on this site. I haven't had any success but I just started trying. I think the problem is the seeds are so fine and they have a problem keeping near the surface. If others can do it we can. Positive thinking Tom
