Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I recently purchased a pump from Little Giant and noticed a California Prop 65 warning on it, so I decided to source a different pump, but each manufacturer I spoke to either said the pump wasn't designed for potable use/for food or they weren't certain what was in the pump since it wasn't required by law to disclose. I suppose since pumps were originally designed for fountains, they don't fall under the Prop 65 category?

Does anyone have any recommendations of brands that should be safe for use in an aquaponics system that generates vegetables to eat? I have a really small set up which only requires an 80 gph pump.

Well, I'm not really sure what they mean by "don't use for food". Do they mean don't use it for pumping vegetable oil? Or don't use it for anything that will come in contact with food production?

A safe way to go is to get a mag-drive pump. The way it's built makes for a seal-less pump, so they won't leak any oil into your system.

Given the context of some of the responses, it sounded like don't use it for anything that will come into contact with food production as it was designed for fountains and fish ponds. I'll have to check to see if they use a mag drive though in their pumps.

Well I just went back and checked and even with companies that sell pumps that do have the mag-drive said they wouldn't recommend using it for food consumption since it wasn't tested for this purpose. Oh well, at least they didn't say directly that something bleeds into the water...only that they're not sure if it's safe.

Mag drive pumps are fine; companies have to say that to cover their rears because people are trigger-happy lawsuit filers. And they probably don't want to shell out the cash to get everything in order to be a bonafide "food safe" product. Unless you see someone else with a valid opinion that says otherwise, you should be good to go.

Thanks for the input, Alex.

The PondMAX PA40 water pump is right for your small system. Because this pump is manufactured with advanced technology to provide you the best aeration for your system. It will really help you to solve your problem. This pump is very easy to maintain and give high performance at very low power consumption.
