I asked this question in the live chat section, but never got to see who answered because the conversation was pushed off of the board by the time I checked it again. So I'll ask it again :)
Should I filter rainwater before adding it to my system? Just had a heavy rainstorm and it filled up all our barrels and then some.

Alex, wouldn't it depend on HOW you collected the water for the barrels? If it came off a tar oil based roof or from a gravel roof ect.?
Yeah, I'd imagine that would make a difference :) Tar oil based roof. I'm thinkin' filter it? What kind of filter would I be looking for?

Hmmm tar based. I think I would filter it through some aquarium floss filter AND activated charcol then I would put some in a different tank and throw a fish in there to see if it affects the fish.. Never know what you might get from that type of roof.
My reading suggests that establishing and running a slow sand filter will reduce the hydrocarbons being leached into the water from the roof ( don't seem to have a link at the moment to support this, google may find it for you quickly). More importantly to us (I see you are quite local to me) it will address the trichinosis parasite risk posed by the raccoons running across your roof and making deposits.
