A friend asked me today about my quarantine procedure for adding new fish to my AP system. I don't have one at this point since I have only 7 small goldfish occupying a 100 gallon tank. I bought the fish from two separate Petsmart stores here in town. Except for one that died this week of unknown causes, they all seem to be healthy and always hungry.
When I get around to ordering my Tilapia, should I take any precautions?
If you only have one system, it will probably be hard to really quarantine the fish. 3-6 weeks would be needed to make fairly sure you don't bring in parasites like ick.
You might be able to provide some protection by having a salt dip or salt bath you could put the fish through before placing them into your system but that could be fairly tricky for some people. You would want to make sure you bring your new fish to the same temperature as your tank and you need to make sure the salt bath or dip is also the same temperature as the tank so you are making the transition as comfortable as possible for them.
