Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I have an aquaponic system thats about 3 weeks old. I planted a watermelon seed and it was doing well til about a week ago. I was wondering if anyone knew what was wrong. My little research pointed toward salt damage but I'm not sure. Thanks

how much salt did you add to the system? Did you add it to help your fish with the nitrite?

I don't add any salt. I have been using filter water.

Do you have fish in your system? What are your levels?

Im using gold fish. At the time of the picture, I had about 30 small gold fish in about 10 to 15 gallons of water.  I have not test my levels. Since them, that watermelon plant was pulled out by my daughter. I replanted 3 new watermelon seedling and have been pay close attention to them. I have not notice the same thing with this 3 seedling; however I have notice some black spots that I can scrape off with my nails. I will keep a close eye to see if it turns out to be the same thing.

Did you get any plants from a nursery and put them in this growbed?

Yes, I did buy some plants from a nursery. So far everything is going well with the plants.

Often plants from nurseries are carriers of bacterial diseases or insects. My guess it you have some kind of leaf spot disease. These bacteria effect some plants while others do fine in the same grow bed. These bacteria thrive in systems with flowing water like aquaponics and hydroponics. I am speaking from experience... I can't grow lettuce or basil in my bed resulting from a similar mistake of transplanting a wholefoods basil plant in my system. I can grow other stuff uneffected like bok choy and tomatoes - they are doing great. The lesson learned is always grow from seed, never trust outside plants.
