Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I have a 600 gallon system and have nitrates as high as the API test will register. Ammonia is .25 and pH is around 6. The dissolved solids are 1700ppm.  I know I can reduce fish food and add more plants to resolve these issues as a long term fix but I'm just about to clear and replant the beds for the winter. I could do a water change but it seems a shame to waste all those nutrients since my outside gardens are winding down. Any suggestions of what I can do for the short term would be appreciated.

tough one

If you have crushed biochar on hand, you could add it to compost piles and drench with tank water.  The charcoal would absorb the nitrate and it would be available to your plants next spring.  In any case, compost piles would be a good place to dispose of it.

Nutrient source for duckweed

Good idea George. While we're on the subject what can poop from filters be used for in the winter?

Here in Fl, soil gardening.  Where you are. . . only compost comes to mind.
