Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi All,

I will keep this short as possible. I have a pond with aeration, feed, and fish. I acre pond 6.5 acre ft. Will be Going solar with solar panel system as 1/2 roof of aquaponic system cover. Want to use water draw from pond at feeding area for water feed for system. Return fresh water after nitrate has been used by plants, back to pond and supplement water system with pond water draw to keep ammonia/nitrite/nitrate system going, I want to use  aeration through barrel/bio media/aeration conversion from ammonia to nitrite to nitrate. Is that an impossible system to set up. Lot more to discuss, but I will be retiring in less that 18 months and want to see what I can do to integrate my pond into a aquaponics system, if possible.

Maybe I could just use a more direct system by adapting to a DWS system instead of FD beds as I had originally thought. Could a combination of each work? The DWS system would be a question for me in that I would not be able to provide any shade, but maybe that is not needed with the floating beds, but I do not know. The FD would be under some shade but I can control the contact time for the roots with the nitrated water. SO what does anyone here think, or maybe better yet someone has done both with a fed, aerated, high fish capacity pond environment.

Now for the vegetables etc, I get growing some things smaller veggies, herbs on the floating beds but with about corn, cabbage, heavy stuff, that could cause a floating bed to be un-level.

Also is there a list of plants that do well on floating beds/mats and those that will do well or better with the FD system? Are there lists that show plant that will not work on floating beds and those that will not grow in FD systems?

In general, I would be more than willing to do one or the other or both but I would like to have some success and not have to start over again and again. I am also open to completely different ideas that would work with pond water as a source and the return water clean from ammonia, nitrite and nitrate reduced or a very low PPT/PPM.

Thanks in advance for the attention to my question(s)  Mike C.
