New to AP in North Houston area/Spring.

Just wanted to say hello and thank you to everyone for their information.  I have been reading a lot in the past three weeks since a short conversation with a gentleman and his wife at a christmas party about AP.  I am very intrigued and starting a small system with my extra fish tanks.  I am hoping I am setting things up correctly.  I have read a couple of little kindle books... they all seem to say the same thing without much detail. So I guess all I can do is hope I am doing it all right.  

Does everyone use a sump, for a small system is it essential.  when I say small... 26 gal fish tank and the grow space about 40 gal ... (haven't got that part set up with drainage yet...just set up the fish.
