Mealy bugs

Has anyone encountered and successfully treated mealy bugs? I have a flood and drain/raft system and am very reluctant to use any sort of sprays because it will most definitely end up in the water. So far I have just been trimming the infected parts of plants or removing them entirely, but these little bugs are very persistent.
