Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I just joined the group and would like eo let you know what I have done.

I did a little read and a lot googling and binging about ap systems and got hooked. My wife collects rain water in barrels and wanted more and I found a source for 55 gallon barrels. They all did contain Mother Murphy's Vanila Flavoring. I got eight for $40.00 gave her five and a long half.

I built a ten foot rack to hold mu five halves. Built my own syphon bells and plumbed the whole works. Pick up a 20 cubic foot bag of bank run 3/8" gravel and gave it all a good washing and filled them.

My source is a 1000 gallon Koi pond I dug twelve years ago with a skimmer box and waterfallbio filter. To give the system a kick start in cycling I washed the bags from the bio filter and put about 5 gallons in each grow bed and the filled them with the pond water. Let this set for three days and then started with the flood and drain. .A week later Planted lettuce, swiss chard and sweet potato vines ( for my wife, she Filippino ) all is growing like a weed.

I just added 1000 red worms about 200 to a grow bed, Now that our cold weather will soon be approaching how all will be in the spring when it is warm again. The Koi all live through our winters as the pond is four foot deep and is heavily aeration throughout the winter and the koi do not seem to mind. Also they do spawn each spring. the fingerlings I trade for the food at a local pet store.

Now I think is the time for them to feed me veggies.

Sounds nice Dennis! A 1000 gallon Koi pond should be able to support lots of veggies!

Sweet. Welcome to the group!
