Dear Fellow Aquapons,

I am sharing a few links on Water...Ancient rainwater harvesting in India and the abundance of water and what were some of the actions that lead to today's scarcity as well as some actions required to get back to re-establishing a balance for an Ecosystem to exist. Some of the links also explain how water has been moved for thousands of years without electricity. Some of these machines have recently been converted to generate electricity... in one case enough to take care of some basic needs of a very small village in North India.

By using such knowledge, incorporating ancient India designs such as regards step tiered farming (as seen in many of the valleys and foothills in India and around the world), Aquaponics knowledge can be used very effectively in both grow food locally and naturally and in helping conserve the precious and scarce resource of fresh water.

As regards knowledge of pH and other such factors, let me assure you, the India farmer as well as the Co-ops that assist many know of such and have instruments to measure. this group has already indicated that the appropriate additives occasionally required are already available (iron chelate etc.), as are other tools and instruments such as pumps / solar panels & batteries / inverters etc.

Aquaponics needs to be introduced both for the Urban market as well as the Rural...but the systems and methods will have to be different. We need to "Educate" as many people as possible, as quickly as possible so that this becomes a reality. I am also posting a response to another discussion on this site which you may not have visited, but the subject actually is more appropriate for the group "Bharatponics"...

"...

As regards "Aquaponics" being THE SOLUTION...No!

I regard it as being one of the main solutions in the overall Agronomics of any area, India being no different.

Dear Alexandre, you are totally correct that in the present form, the way most people practice Aquaponics, it will be really a "want" situation for the upper middle class in India and not for the remainder of the population in rural areas...here a "need" situation. We have to address Aquaponics for both sectors as both have different requirements.

India is rapidly changing both in terms of population and it's location but also in its economic power. The rapid continued move to the Urban areas as well as the tremendous increase in economic ability has resulted in the large affluent middle class demanding better quality and a wider variety of food. Following the Dot Com burst in 2000 and the return migration of a lot of NRI's to India, this demand for "Western style" foods has grown rapidly. There is huge demand from the growing hospitality industry for the "designer" lettuce and other such leafy greens. this is constantly spurred on by the endless popularity of the various cooking shows being aired on "Bollywood" TV channels...India has it's own "Master Chef" franchise and participants have traveled many nations as well as cooked international cuisine (some received Culinary Awards from US President Obama). For such demand in these urban areas, there are all the necessary tools and facilities present for Aquaponics systems to be built and operated as they are in most parts of the world today...yes you will have to use inverters for the power shortages that exist as well as lots of water storage containers given that water too is usually only available for certain periods of the day. That being said, just imagine the thousands of empty apartment rooftops crying out for Aquaponics Systems!! Estimate of population that exists in such areas...300 million plus...!!

Yes there are lots of slums and such areas in Urban India that also need to be addressed, but here there is access to power and water to some extent so they too do not need a drastic re-configuring of the Aquaponics systems / operation.

Now we know that India's population has grown significantly since Independence in 1947. Estimates today are over 1 billion. At the time of Independence, almost 85% of the population was rural based. The little research done in this field that I am aware of suggests that in the 60 years or so since Independence, this has decreased to 70% or so...700 million mouths to feed!

http://appscmaterial.blogspot.com/2011/01/urbanization-in-india-and...

It is here where the smart brains of many (yourself included), need to start to collaborate and experiment how to incorporate Aquaponics into the Agronomic of the area. Aquaponics is the ABC in the growing alphabet...we need to see how to incorporate this into the "Bharatponics" solution. I am really pleased to learn that you are working with Neolithic building designs. I do believe that there is huge potential of creating large man made Ecosystem by using such designs even though one is faced with extreme limitation of resources. Gravity is "FREE" and all design should be incorporated to take this into account. Here Aquaponics does not have to be "Soil less" provided adequate filtration systems are incorporated into the designs. How do many of the rural farmers move water today in theses locations? Is it not with mules or other animals going around the circle of the well opening. With proper design and implementation, Aquaponics can help create sustainable ecosystems that are living food jungles in such areas.

Why am I so positive about this...just see what one man could do in one village

Looking forward to working with you...let's see what we can contribute. Yes it is highly likely that we will not be able to solve all the problem of growing enough food or significantly reduce hunger...Yet could you really be able to sleep at night if you never even tried...especially when you know that you have that valuable education and can share such...is this not what the Upanishds and Vedas teach us? Is Anna Daan not the highest charity per Indian culture?

I am looking for Desi Friends who are willing to learn Aquaponics and take on this mission. If you have any serious interest in this, then let's work together towards this goal. Lots & lots of news articles re current practices have been and will continue to be written. Let me remind you, the Developed world faces the same realities, after all, these Corporations are domiciled here. India does not need a "foreign" solution...it needs one to be implemented by it's own people who know where the shoe pinches.

Following Independence, the various governments and their policies did not allow the ownership of agricultural land by foreigners. In an attempt to rapidly increase the agricultural output for the exploding population, they simple followed what the developing countries were doing. It is easy to criticize such but when you are faced with potential famine or use of such methods, their initial choice was understandable. Now that they know better, their continued actions are not justifiable. There are however numerous organic growing movements that have started and educating people of such dangers. Our worlds have shrunk and we can now all be educated in the most safe, effective and sustainable way of growing food...using Aquaponics as the basics of all growing and then incorporating other methods such as Permaculture and organics so as to establish Ecosystems that will continue to provide living food jungles.

Here is an extract of a letter that I recently sent to a member of this group.

I have been meaning to help spread the knowledge and use of Aquaponics in my Ancestral Motherland for some time now. Lots of offers but from differing sources that are not necessarily on same wave length as me. By starting this group, you have helped to make this "Desi" driven and not as otherwise referred "Farangi". This way, I believe, Aquaponics will become widely acceptable in Bharat, especially if we can remind people the importance of Fish / Water & Food (Life), as by examples of Matsaya and Mother Ganga.

Please review my website and let me know what possibilities you can see re our collaboration. I need to set up a couple of small joint Aquaponics projects in Bharat with people like yourself (God willing they will become self sustaining and very profitable - both monetarily as well as in helping significantly reduce / help eliminate the world hunger epidemic we are facing). I have recently hosted EKAL officials to see the possibility of introducing Sahibs Hybrid Aquaponics systems (like the links below), to the almost 35,000 villages that they operate in (teach almost 1 million rural children...with the population of the villages they live in, that could be a huge section of the population...say even 10 people per child, we are looking at 10 million+ ). They were very interested (obviously one village at a time), but they could not see the vision of how to set them up and train operators.

It seems that my prayers are close to being answered....All of you can be Key players in Bharat who will be able to help further this Mission. Sahib Aquaponics has already declared such via it's website...www.feedhungernow.org

I look forward to endless wonderful opportunities working together.

Credit is extended to businesses, farmers, countries on high interest rates and then all their blood is sucked. In some places it works in the form of mortgages and credit cards where people are lured into an abyss that they can never escape; In rural communities it works in form of Monsanto and agri banks extending loan to the poor farmer with the promise of prosperity. Economies of nations are destroyed with instruments like IMP and world bank all serving the interest of bankers like builderberg/Goldmansacks/Rothchilds/Rockefellers etc. Governments of developing countries tax their nations and steal people's hard earned money by monetary control over their wealth(printing money), in form of duties and by direct taxation on utility bills, food etc. Even countries like U.S borrow money from the Union of six private banks called federal reserve and pay interests by taxing their people.
