Hole Size and Spacing in 4" PVC Nutrient Flow System?

I am planning phase two of my Plan 'B' aquaponics system. I want to use 4" PVC pipe and am curious as to what members are using for the hole size and spacing. I am currently considering 3" holes and spaced every 6 inches. Recommendations?

Also... any suggestions on inexpensive "cups/potting" containers, which would dictate the size of the hole in the pipe?

I think I did 2 1/2" holes and I would make the spacing at least 8" on centers or perhaps more since most plants will start crowding each other if they are too close unless you are only planning on growing chives and baby greens in the pipes.
