Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I'm about eight weeks into my first system and it's been very therapeutic, though there have been some anxious moments. There already is a ton of info here and I look forward to learning as much as I can to make my system the best it can be. I took the IBC tote idea that is well documented on the internet and started circulating water. It took a few days for this newbie to get my auto syphon working correctly and filled the grow bed with 3/4 inch gravel. I planted right away and just waited for the system to cycle ( I used the fishless cycling utilizing ammonia and seaweed extract and waited for the bacteria to get going). I had high nitrites way longer than I thought I should have. That's when the anxiety kicked in thinking I must have screwed something up. Then all of the sudden a week ago they dropped to 0, ammonia was 0 and nitrates were 80ppm. I introduced 60 hybrid bluegill this past Friday and now I guess I'm an aquaponer (I think I read that term somewhere here) I added another grow bed in the form of a 55 gal barrel cut in half length wise. I can't believe the difference in plant growth since adding the fish. Tons of vibrant green foliage. Now I'll work on fattening up my bluegill, keeping the aphids of my broccoli and pepper plants, and wait to enjoy some very wholesome and fresh food. The photo is a very early shot. I'll get busy and take some more pics.

Thanks for the info! I'll try not to be a rookie too long
