Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I just started a raft bed system. I used water from one of our aquariums and the Ammonia is less than 0.25ppm as is the nitrites and nitrates. I haven't put any fish in htis system yet. But i did add the rafts two days ago and plants yesterday. I now have what looks like soap bubbles. It's foaming up at the top of the FT and at the inlet to the grow bed. This isn't just the normal air bubbles. I was going to add fish tonight, but I'm going to hold off tell I hear from you. I appreciate any suggestions and the help I've gotten from reading this forum. - Brad

Foam is usually from excess nutrients but if the materials used for the system were not well rinsed before being put into service, it could be from residues on the rafts or in the tank.

Thanks,

I am afraid it is residue on the raft. It has happened previously when I was testing the system. This time I let the system run with water for 2 days, added aquarium water and the raft sit for 2 days and hadn't seen anything. So I transferred plants.

So I'll start over before adding fish.
