Floating Raft (DWC) System Question!

In a DWC do you you need a siphon? Does the water run continously? Or do you operate it in the Ebb and flow style? Confused! I've been reading on this for some time and don't seem to understand how the DWC Beds work. Your help and info would be greatly appreciated !
