Aquaponic Gardening

we want to put together a 4 150 gallon tank systems to grow out our fish.  We have bought a 30gpm sand filter and making a big biofilter to work with the sand pump.  How can we cordinate the two without overrunning the tanks or biofilter?  Please give us some ideas

Can you post some specs or links to the particular filters and pumps you are talking about.  Perhaps a diagram might help too.

Many people here use media beds as filters that also happen to grow their plants so avoid the trouble of separate bio-filters.  At least this is what I do and therefore have very little experience with the filters you are talking about.

I don't know what a sand pump is?  Often the best way to set up a system is with one pump and then gravity flow for the rest of the system so you don't need to worry about one pump overflowing another tank because the other pump doesn't keep up.  So you would probably need to pump from a sump tank through the sand filter that needs to have pressure and have that feed the fish tanks which would drain back into the sump tank.  Now you didn't mention any plant growing so this doesn't sound like Aquaponics but rather aquaculture so you will wind up having to change out water to keep the nutrients from getting too high for the fish (this is a waste of water in my mind.)

Now if it is going to have raft beds or some other growing means to use up the nutrients, you will probably need to pump from a sump tank through the sand filter and then the sand filter could feed the plants and the water would drain from the plants back to the fish tanks which would drain back to the sump where the pump is.

TC the sand pump is the sand filter pump used in swimming pools.  Many of the aquaponic/hydroponic systems use these.   Great idea on the raft system.   We may just use that as well.  Our tanks will be in the fish house side, that houses all our breeders, babies etc.   We plan on 4. 150 gallons of water in each as the grow out tanks.  Our fish room is 15'x30' with aquariums on one side and in the middle and the 4'x3 1/2' tanks on the other side wall.  We were going to put treated wood tops on the tanks but now thinking about the raft system beds on top.  We definetely have enough light for lettuce.  Thanks for responding we appreciate all the help we can get.
