Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

So I've read the forums. I've read Sylvia's book and taken the class.

I built an AP system and started the cycling process. First I established good pH at between 6.8 and 7.4. Then got my Ammonia to between 2 and 4ppm. I then added the Nitrifying Bacteria from the Fishless Cycling Kit. It's been 3 weeks but and even though I keep my pH at the proper levels and the water temperature at around 77 degrees. The Ammonia levels remain at between 2 and 4ppm but I never seem to get any Nitrite readings. Is this normal three weeks into the cycling process?

I've read that cycling is the most frustrating part of an AP system and to be patient. So I guess I'm wondering if I'm just being paranoid or should I see something by now?

Quick question...where did you get your water from? If you're using city water, it might have chlorine or chloramines in it and that could be your problem. Other than that, cycling just takes a long time. But I've never used a cycling kit, so I can't really say if you should be seeing results already.

Yes the water has chlorine but am not sure about chloramine however I added Chloramax according to the water volume to be safe. Thanks for the reply Alex.
