Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Before I begin planting in my (yet to be built) system, I was curious to know what successful crops are working for you folks already into aquaponics.

I heard that greens are the way to go but would appreciate any input from successful growers.

Thanks,

Bob

You can grow most things appropriate to your climate/lighting/space in aquaponics.  Greens, lettuce, kale, collards, swiss chard etc are all great cool season crops in aquaponics.  Many herbs also do well in aquaponics.  In the early days of an aquaponics system it is often recommended that people stick with greens but once a system gets a bit more mature you can grow most anything.  But I've planted tomatoes from day one in new aquaponics system and have done well enough with them especially if I had some seaweed extract to add to the system.  I usually cycle up fishless before adding fish.

Last winter broccoli did wonderfully for me and I grew kale and swiss chard right on into summer.  Lufa vines grew from my 300 gallon system right up and over the oak tree near by.

I've grown

peas

corn

yardlong beans

tomato

lufa

rosemary

Rosell

Banana

Bamboo

Papaya

basil

lettuce

Kale

Collards

Broccoli

Veronica

swiss chard

beets

turnips

radish

Mizuna

Shingiku

Tatsoi

sorrel

viola

Pansy

Nasturtium

carrots

Cilantro

Dill

Fennel

stevia

Aloe

sweet potato

onions

chives

Pac Choi

Parsley

water cress

water chestnuts

Mache

duckweed

pond plants

Barbados Cherry

Meyer Lemon

Peppers

Kohlrabi

Cabbage

Chinese cabbage

Oregano

Tansy

Malibar spinach

New Zeland Spinach

Purslane

And I'm sure there are others that I'm just not thinking of right now.

Awesome, TC.

It does depend on your system. For example my school system is a 50 gallon barrel with a "grow tray" and pea pebbles in it. We're growing cucumbers (they're growing like mad; swiss chard; lettuce (very successful); onions (sort of); dill (very successful); etcetera. Anyways, if we had a larger tank, more fish, and a larger grow bed we could grow a fruit tree. Not only this; if we had a better filtration in our grow beds we might be able to grow the beans so that they produce beans. Also it is widely said that a media based system is better for solids filtration/nutrients so if you were thinking DWC then attach a media bed to it or look at what Vlad is doing (http://aquaponicscommunity.com/group/fish-less-systems/forum/topics...). But, I hope it's after the fact of attaching a media bed.

I am inspired by you folks who have been doing this for a while.

As my plans are beginning to come together, I am getting very excited to start growing veggies and fish. I am learning so much from this forum and am grateful to all of you who are helping me with my new adventure.

Caution: aquaponics is addicting.http://aquaponicscommunity.com/page/you-know-youre-addicted-to
