Build up of solid waste in tank

Last night I startled my fish when I shined a light into the tank and in the commotion, I noticed a lot of solid wasted get kicked up and was floating around.  The ammonia levels are okay but I am concerned that this could continue building up and mess with my system.  Do I need to flush the water out and clean the tank or should I let it be?  How do I treat this if at all?

I suppose this also means that there could be a buildup in the plumbing too.  I haven't checked yet though.
