Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Hi I have been having some problems with bugs in my aquaponics set, First it was Fly that would attack me and bite me when i would go in my greenhouse, few times i had to run out of the greenhouse because it was to much( Yes fly do bite LOL). I solved that with the sticky long strips.

now i have a different bug problem, some type of bug iv never seen before is eating my basil leaves. Its SUPERR sticky i cant even pull em off the Leaves without ripping the leaves. i took a few pictures of it can anyone tell me what this is and how to treat this problem.

Also my few of the plants in the system are looking wrinkly and dry and weird looking, i took pics if anyone can help me with these 2 problems i am SUPPPER thankful :))).

I don't know about the Spinosad, it may not be safe for fish.

Diatomateous Earth might be worth dusting around with since it causes insects to get dehydrated.

I'm not sure about the tip burn but I do know that many new aquaponics systems suffer from potassium and trace element deficiencies which is why many people will use some maxicrop or other seaweed extract during the start up of a new aquaponics system.

so is it to late to buy seaweed extract now? what is a good one to get and how much do i add to my system 200gallon FT 75 gallon GB.

i will also buy some diatomateous, now by dusting around you mean just toss it around in the greenhouse or on the GB?

The DE powder you can get dusters for it or you might put some in a empty shaker bottle (like you might have an old large empty spice container with a shaker top you could find.) And use that to dust it around on the leaves of the plants where you are having issues with bugs and around the grow beds.  It's pretty harmless stuff to us but you don't want to breath a lot of it or get it in your eyes and it will dry your skin out so you might want to wear a dust mask and leave the greenhouse for a while after dusting.

Seaweed extract.  I don't think it's too late to get seaweed extract, I don't think it's that seasonal.  It might be a little late for some of the seedlings but try it and see, some may recover.  How much, perhaps a cap full (like an ounce or less) into the grow bed where the water flows in.  It will tint your water real dark if you put too much in but the fish don't usually seem to mind so much, ya just can't see them so well for a few days.  You might do the seaweed extract at that amount weekly or every few weeks and then when you use up the first bottle wait and see if the plants tell you they want more later on after you are feeding actual fish with fish food.  Often you might get away with only dosing early on.
