Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

I've taken Sylvia's online class and have read through the book.

I purchased some IBC Totes and the Aquaponics Store's SS3 plumbing kit but before I start cutting I would like to ask if someone with experience would double check my figures and make sure I'm thinking about this correctly.

Note: I used this nifty Volume converter link: http://www.calculatoredge.com/enggcalc/volume.html

IBC Tote ~ 36” x 44”

Dry zone – 2”

Bio zone – 10”

Sludge – 2”

Grow Bed Depth = 14”

Grow Bed 36”x44”x12” = 19008” = 11 cubic ft

11 cubic ft = ~82 gallons

3 growbeds x 82 gallons each = 246 gallons

246 * .55 media displacement (Hydroton) = 136 gallons

136 gallons = 18 cubic feet

18 cu ft = 31104 cubic inches

36” x 44” = 1584”

31104 cu in. / 1584” = ~ 20” sump tank depth

6 gal of water per sq foot of growing space

1584” = 11 sq ft * 3 = 33 sq ft.

33sq. ft. x 6 gal = ~200 gallons

200 gallons = ~27 cu ft

27 cu ft = 46656 cu. in.

46656 cu. / 1584” = fish tank depth of ~ 30”

Does this look correct? Obviously I would buffer a bit but just want to see if I'm going about this correctly?
