I have a 100gal tank with gold fish and I am feeding duckweed that is co-cultured with algae (as a nitrogen fixer). Before I covered the sides of the tank, I had algae blooms sufficient to kill the fish. Covering the sides brought the problem immediately under control with the interesting side effect that the fish began to graze on what algae did grow on the sides of the tank. They did not do this before the sides were covered and now prefer the algae to the duckweed. The high carotene content of the algae has done wonders to the color of the fish.

Clearly, you are building a system where artistic value is a major concern and a covered tank would not be your first choice. I am reminded, however, of a relative that built a green house with green fiber glass and nothing would grow. A clear green building material may be a solution to any algae problems and what I assume would be your desire to view the fish.
Hi Sophia,

Hi Sophia,

Another option for filter is a Bio - sponge filter. http://www.aquariumproducts.com.au/catalogue_products.php?prodID=47...

This way I remove the sponge on one and clean them and after a 2 month I then clean the other... This allows the bacteria grow on the cleaned one as it takes about 4 to 6 weeks for the bacteria that converts the ammonia and nitrite to grow...

Yes, Hydroton can be your only filter (or the home of the biological filter and worms) but you need at least as much of it as you have fish tank to be really effective at supporting much fish. I actually like to have twice as much grow bed volume as I have fish tank.

I actually generally remove the sponge filters from the pumps since they always clog up. So long as you don't have too many fish for your media bed, you actually want the fish crud and poo right in the media bed to feed the plants, bacteria and composting worms.

Yea, glass tanks can be an algae issue, ya want to protect the water from sun for the most part.

As TCLynx suggested the media will be your filter but you probobly want to add a small filter ,sponge, sock or whatever you call it to catch fish crud from dumping in your growbed. You could put it on the other end as well. Either or just something to catch any sollids from emptying into the media.

The Bottom tank will be fitted with a simple water pump in the bottom to push the water up into the top tank. Is there any need for a filter here?

The top tank will be filled with planters that are filled with hydroton balls. The Filter on the right hand side will be Dome shape filter with a open and close valve inside to control water flow.

I am trying to make the most basic system for the kitchen, to grow small vegetables.

I have tried to find out the specific components to make a filter... but struggling to find a standard fitting that will do the job.

Thanks again for any comments I have been working on this design and will post further developments. I really appreciate the feed back!

Ya i see where your going with this. It Looks pretty straight forward. I am working on one as well and after doing the work realized that i might have an algea issue with my glass tank. Keep that in mind. If your tank is in sunlight it will promote algea. Looks good though.

If you simply fill the top tank with the media (instead of putting it in planters) and do a flood and drain sort of thing, the media in that top bed will be your filter.
