AP bonsai?

I have growbeds full of gravel with strawberries and such growing happily in a flood and drain system. Its my other plant addiction, together with bonsai. So I put a couple species of ficus, crotons and shefflera just to see what happens. I want to see if they grow faster than in the ground. What do y'all think? Theve been in the bed two weeks or so without anything bad happening. But will they be "happy"?
