I want to build the basic system in this video, but I'm concerned about a lack of depth in the grow bed. I can purchase a 4 x 4 bed similar to the one in the video for about $80 (with a 20% discount coupon) from my local hydroponics store.  I will be using a 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank that I used for a grow bed in our outdoor system in Tampa. (Now that I'm in Michigan, I can't have an outside system.)

Any ideas for adding a simple filter to this design?

Brian,

If you want to build this system, all the parts can be purchased easily. The main tank you can get at any pond store or Tractor Supply store, pipe and fittings at any Lowes or Home Depot. Water pump Harbor Freight and/or Lowes or Home Depot.

The Filtering system is more or less the grow bed, but to supplement it how about a small canister pool filter.

If you find you must add more filtration than your bed can provide, you could add a bin or trash can or barrel and fill it with netting or anything that will provide surface area (add some aeration to it) and plumb the water inlet to it into the bottom and let the water flow up through the material and overflow out back to the fish tank or grow bed or however you can arrange it.
