Dear Aquaponics community,
I am a newbie and have been reading and getting ready to get into the aquaponics world.
This year I began playing around with a hydroponic system and have been experiencing the trouble associated with running out of water. Granted my system has a 22 gallon reservoir the tomato plants I have are obviously heavy drinkers.
My question is centered around replacement of water for aquaponics systems. Looking at sites and business like Green Acres Aquaponics (http://greenacreaquaponics.com) I have to imagine that water is lost from plant uptake and evaopartion. How is water put back into the system most effectively?

I use float valves to top up water from my well or from a rainwater storage tank. The float valves only top up a little at a time when it is needed and therefore minimize the impact of water chemistry fluctuations due to large water top ups all at once. I install the float valves in the lowest tank (usually the sump tank) at a height where they will only top up when the water level drops below normal but high enough that I can hopefully keep the pump from running dry (that last bit of course will depend on how strong the pump is and probably won't keep up if a major plumbing failure is letting the pump or a drain line run water out of the system somewhere.)
