Aquaponic Gardening

A Community and Forum For Aquaponic Gardeners

Just wanted to show off my 1st Aquaponics system. Paced in about 60 plants for now and trying to balance it out before adding fish. Not sure what type of fish either? I live in the Sacramento area. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

If your going to do edible fish i would go for tilapia. In california you shouldnt have any problems finding them for a good price. If your worried about killing them i would start with goldfish. At 10 cents a pop you couldnt go wrong.

You'll probably have to heat the water for tilapia during the colder months of the year...even in Sacramento. But sure...

If I were you, I'd talk to Jon Parr, a long time member here who also rears, and sells fish and fingerlings from his AP farm. Jon's a very knowledgeable, stand up guy. He's also right next door to you in Santa Cruz (Soquel)... here is a link to what species he has available...

Nice system BTW...

Yeah he might have to heat it, but don't things get pretty hot in California? If he went with a fish that could handle the colder temps, wouldn't just have to focus on cooling the water instead?
