Some information about my IBC based system

Fish Tank = 175 gallons

Grow Bed = 80 gallons with automatic siphon working well. 1/2" tube with valve for water circulation with 300 gph pump setting. (cracking the valve half open LOL) Pump is rated for 594 gph.

Hydroton media

Air pump with 2 outlets working well.

Water Temp maintained at 76F with immersion water heater.

Chlorine already removed before putting fish in with chloramine.

Also put API brand nitrifying bacteria 8oz.

All this was accomplished 2 weeks ago.

PH=8.2

Ammonia = 4.0

Nitrite = 2.0

Nitrate = 40

GoldFish are doing well - active, hungry and finish whatever little I put in within 2 minutes.

Additional comment - water seems clear - starting to see brown lining around the edge of the grow bed.

Nothing seems to grow - some seedlins sprouted but seems to be not growing. Put a couple of small flowering plants after washing with rain water a week ago. Seems to be withering.

I know it's driving me nuts not to see any growth. But I know patience and time needed. How long should I wait before changing anything. I don't want to make too many changes (learnt this from tuning PID controllers) for slow responding systems.

Any comments and feedback are welcome and appreciated.

DWC Raft Beds - Are there local sellers on the east coasttag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2014-04-22:4778851:Topic:5589902014-04-22T22:59:18.378ZPaul Phillip Meyerhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/PaulPhillipMeyer

Hello,

I'm about to purchase around 200 4X6 raft beds but the only dealer I know is Beaver plastics in California. I'm surprised I couldn't find a direct post on this since most people do DWC and either make their own or buy them setup. Anyone have any resources to a plastic company that would make them on the east coast? I'm in Virginia. I know shipping is really high so I'd like to pick them up.

Hey, I was wondering, does anybody know of any good informational resources for raising catfish? Especially if they are resources that you've used yourself and found helpful. I've been thinking about adding catfish as an addition to my system.

Well, apparently the "specialist" we went to didn't really know as much as we though. I just discovered that I have a thrip problem, not a spider mite problem. In his defense, the damage does look similar. How do we know? Well, my parents had the brilliant idea of taking some of affected leaves from my plants and sticking them under a microscope. The result? (see below) So now I have a very real thrip problem instead of an imaginary spider mite problem. So...does anyone have any tried and…

I haven't noticed any adults, just the larvae. But I might have missed them. I've heard nematodes work...are they okay to use with aquaponics?

We live in rural Michigan and have a 1/2 acre man dug pond- no liner- stocked with fish. Is it worth my time to utilize this, or should I just build my own fish tanks. ?? I love the idea of using the pond that is already there if possible- but I'm assuming there may be extra filtration needed since there is no liner and there would be more debris and dirt to deal with. ?? The pond is aerated using bubblers and we use a all natural dye to minimize excessive algae growth on the bottom of the pond (15 feet at deepest point).

We do have ducks, geese, deer, an awesome blue heron and of course frogs, snakes, etc. that utilize the pond for water and food. Will this be an issue since I'm sure they introduce non-fish bacteria (E.Coli??) to the pond?

Any suggestions or ideas would be helpful!

After many variations, this is the simplest heater I've been able to build. I had to come up with this last year while waiting for my $600 heater to be built and delivered. when it finally arrived, I just left it in the box and continued to use the home built unit.

DO NOT USE THE COPPER ELEMENT FROM HOME DEPOT! YOU MUST ORDER A STAINLESS STEEEL ELEMENT. ....This is a 2000 watt element from Home Depot, a 1-1/2" to 1" reducer, a 1-1/2" uniseal, and a fitting with net pots to keep the fish off the element. I found that a heavy duty timer works for a thermostat. I run it for 15 mins on the hour to keep my 150 gallon tank toasty. this would be adjusted according to your needs. i have used this on as much as 600 gallons, but would recommend going to the 240 volt, 4000 watt for anything over 400 gallon. Note - the 2" net pots slip right onto a male threaded 1-1/2" nipple.

The top pipe is optional, i like to keep it as tall as the water level will allow. This will create a convective flow of water across the element. Works great!
