I recently discovered a horde of armyworms (at least, I'm pretty sure that's what they are) taking up residence in my growbeds and doing a very good lawnmower imitation with my new lettuce seedlings. So far, I've just been picking them out by hand and killing them. Which is fine, my system is small enough to be able to do that. I was wondering if anyone has any idea on how to get rid of them, especially when they're small and hard to pick out. 'Cause it's not much fun waiting for them to get…

One source recommended flour, because the worms will eat that, bloat and die. Diatomaceous earth was also recommended. (I feel like I should know this, but will diatomaceous earth have a negative efffect on my redworm population? I know it's okay for fish.)

Oh, and here's a picture. I highly recommend staring at it while you eat your cereal in the morning.

Well, apparently the "specialist" we went to didn't really know as much as we though. I just discovered that I have a thrip problem, not a spider mite problem. In his defense, the damage does look similar. How do we know? Well, my parents had the brilliant idea of taking some of affected leaves from my plants and sticking them under a microscope. The result? (see below) So now I have a very real thrip problem instead of an imaginary spider mite problem. So...does anyone have any tried and…

I haven't noticed any adults, just the larvae. But I might have missed them. I've heard nematodes work...are they okay to use with aquaponics?

I saw a post about two weeks ago re "how to get air into the water" and send it up to the top of the planting section. Not sure where the post is now...

The solution should be to send the water up to the top to a container and then add a bubble or two to that tank and then send it down to the plants.

If you know where the original post is please pass this on.

Thanks,

I am constantly loosing the battle against fungus gnats. It's not the adults that are the problem but the larva. Everytime I think I have an answer they come back and go nuts. This time they have been destroying all my Onions from the inside of the bulb out.

We have a constant flood and drain system. Basically the water is always coming in and going out.

We've tried Nematoads, BT Thuriside, Mosquito dunks, Alchoal spray, washing all the rock out and starting over, placing cut potatoes on the rock and even flooding the system and sweeping all of the larva out. I have sticky traps every where and still can't get them controled.

Please any ideas or suggestions? Our system is inside our house in an extra room, so there are certain things we can't use. And we can only afford low cost solutions. I'm willing to try anything! Our plants were looking great but the Tomato leaves are starting to be affected.
