I live in the Caribbean and I am in desperate need of fish food for my tilapia. I have been using Premium fish food but the shipping to Florida is almost as expensive as the food itself. Any suggestions for a cheaper source?

I'd be interested to hear the community's thoughts on raising fish on poultry waste (or as a supplement). I'm under the impression that this is a common commercial practice. Having a few of the little ladies myself, I was curious as to whether it would be a good idea to place a lip of a fish tank underneath a roost and incorporate an aquaponic system greenhouse with a chicken coop. I know the concept may be a little disgusting to some, but I'd love to hear some pros and cons. I realize chicken feed quality is a priority. One concern I have with the design at large is would the increased humidity have an effect on the health of my poultry? But anyway, concerning the consumption of chicken waste by aquatic life: What are your thoughts?
Feed to growbed area ratiotag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2012-09-18:4778851:Topic:3931262012-09-18T01:53:14.390ZBarthttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/bartman

Hi folks,

I read about a ratio of 60 - 100g of feed per day per square meter of grow bed.

Does this make sense or sound about right to those who have been at this for a while?

I'm going to assume it depends on what you are trying to grow - nitrogen hogs would do best at the high end of the ratio.

I guess this would lead to my next question, how much does a fish eat in terms of body weight?

Hello, I've been reviewing the posts any have been unable to find an answer. What is the best goldfish food to use in AP system.

My system is about 2 months old, nicely cycled. Plants are showing yellowing leaves and lame growth on some plants. I believe I have an iron deficiency and will be addressing that with nutrients but figured I should be feeding my gold fish with premium food. Any suggestions? What would be the best/proven goldfish feed? Thank you in advance. :)

Does anyone have either personal experience or research evidence of tilapia being fed a diet that completely cuts out the need for commercial feed? The replacements we've considered are black soldier fly larvae, worms, duckweed and maybe even scraps from greens (produced by an adjacent traditional farm). Most of the research I've encountered considers only supplementation of one of these at a time rather than in combination to form a balanced diet of proteins, lipids etc.

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the world of aquaponics and have been reading up on it for the past couple of days trying to finds ways to make my aquaponics farm completely sustainable(as everyone else). I've searched and searched and found a couple guys from Georgia who are on youtube who are introducing a very recent rediscovery of using ancient chinese farming methods. They made an "incubator" that acts as a natural pond where the fish can get a somewhat complete source of food(basically duckweed, algae, microorganisms, and worms). If you want to read more of it go to bioponica.org.

They also found ways to increase nutrient strengths in aquaponics by adding worm compost tea bags and this biochar stuff to growing medium which supposed is enriched with potassium, magneisum, calcium, and phosphorus.

Anyways they sayed something about using biochar in their medium. I've read up on it...how to make it, how it lowers greenhouse gases, and what it does for plants. I can see how it is great for soil, but there is not much rich information for using it for aquaponics.

Has anyone used Biochar, not charcoal from hardware stores, in their medium? I know it has a high pH and am wondering if someone mixes it with some other medium to lower it. I'm going to use ebb & flow so i'm not worried about water saturation abilities this stuff has.

Well, I am about 2 weeks away from getting the first fish for my first AP system. Well, I am about 2 weeks away from getting the first fish for my first AP system. I have done some research on fish feed options, and it seems that the consensus is that there is no organic feed in the US (which completely sucks). If anyone does know of a OG feed plz speak up! Looking at standard feed, they all have alot of corn and soy in them. Most likely these are GMO (genetically modified organisms). If there is GMO in the fish feed, then it is entirely possible that all the organisms grown within the AP system are contaminated :( We do not know for sure how the GMO's assimilate into the surrounding organisms and what their effects are. I feel that this is a hughe bottleneck in the AP community. How the hell can the AP produce be "organic" if GMO's were put into the system (which they are in the feed)??? The organic label has turned into a sham for big corporations to make money, which destroys the original vision of the small, local, and earth-friendly farmers who originated the idea of OG certification. Most small farmers cant even afford the certification process (like me and my peers lol). Sorry, enough rambling... So does anyone know of a non-GMO feed available? It is really important to mine and the worlds health, to avoid GMO's if at all possible. We need to put pressure on these companies to make non-GMO or even better organic fish feeds. I have already emailed 3 feed companies stating how important this issue is. This transition to organic fish feed by the feed companies will have to be powered by the will to make the earth a better place, not by money. Commercial aquaculturists are the main group who supports these feed companies, and large aquaculture facilities may not be able to or want to pay a premium for Organic feed. This would make producing organic fish feeds for the feed companies non-profitable. AP growers need to send more emails, and make it better know to these companies that Organic Feed is a MUST HAVE! We must also let them know that while the number of small scale AP growers is low now, that wont last for long. The demand for the organic feed will grow larger everyday, in my opinion, and any feed company that does end up creating organic fish feed will be pioneers of the health food movement. This is due to AP's feasibility in producing healthy local food with little H20, space, and other inputs. Let me here what you guys think about this, or even better if some1 has found non-GMO feed share some info on it.
