Hello everyone! I have been thinking on it for a while and I have decided that I would like to go to school to learn about and aquire a skillset to push my aquaponics system to its maximum potential. I know little of the difference of horticulture and agriculture though.

First let me explain where I want to be and what I plan on doing. In the next ten years I plan on living in southeastern Alaska near Juno and owning a few acres of land. I will have a full greenhouse to house a small pond and the growbeds as well as a work area, nersery, storage and a hut outside for duckweed and soldier flys. I also plan on having a small out door garden to grow additional plants (in the soil) during the summer. Lastly I want to raise small animals like chickens, rabits, and pigs, maybe even goats or a milk cow and a meat cow. I figure the cow can come later, if at all, and I will start slow with the animals, kind of learning as I go I guess.

Now what I do know about agriculture is that it deals with legitimate farming, in the ground, and with animals or animal husbantry. I figure that would help with my animal ambitions however what I plan on doing with animals isn't going to be a large scale operation at all. Just enough to suppliment my families cost of food if not eliminate it all together. As far as the farming comes in, i grew up on a farm and though I wasn't all involved with every aspect of the farm I feel that I know enough to start and I can research on my own to get by with soil farming and either degree I decide on will fill in the rest.

What I understand of Horticulture is that it deals more souly on plants and gardens, everything from vegetables to exotic flowers and ferns. I can't say I give a tinkers darn about anything I can't eat or use in hurbalism and medicine or even landscaping. However I do care about the universal inner workings of plants, what diseases they can catch, the bugs that eat them, and the different effects of nutritional deffisencies. I want the ability to know how to see "something coming" and correct the issue before it becomes a real problem.

My real question is, what degree is going to be most benifictial to me and my family with keeping my aquaponics system running, pushing it to its max (health and production wise), keeping the whole operation completely self sufficient, and the engineering efficentcy. I know I can't have my cake and eat it too but is there anything out there that would maybe cover everything I would be doing maybe including the animals too?
Raising Catfishtag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2013-12-05:4778851:Topic:5342862013-12-05T20:25:36.557ZAlex Veidelhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/AlexVeidel

Hey, I was wondering, does anybody know of any good informational resources for raising catfish? Especially if they are resources that you've used yourself and found helpful. I've been thinking about adding catfish as an addition to my system.

He has adapted 2 systems one being free range chickens which are put in a shelter, during night time, right above the fish pond which means the dung doesn't get mixed with the poultry feed.

Another system in which the chicken is inside a cage and feed is given in to the cage. By this method the chicken dung along with feed and more feather, than the previous method, falls in to the pond clogging the suction heads and filters.

By either of the methods there are advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages being the cost for fish feed is reduced drastically and fish seems to love poultry dung and growth of fish is excellent, no need to look at the clock to feed the fish because the chicken drops through out the day and night. On an average Tilapia reaches about 500-600 gms in 5 - 6 months time.

Disadvantages are the bacterias and viruses present in the dung could contaminate the water which in turn could do the same to fish. Some results have shown that fish meat have had salmonella if the poultry is infected with the same.

Now he has planned to do a system in which the poultry is separate and the dung is collected in a tray and then heated on a shallow tray starting with low temperatures until it reaches about 60deg centigrade and once it is dried it is added in to the fish tank. The dung seems to have very less odor and has the same effect as fresh manure or fresh dung and free from bacteria and virus.

well how about introducing this system to an Aquaponics system. Just came across and wanted to share. some ideas and thoughts about this would be great.

thank you for your valuable time

Regards,

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the world of aquaponics and have been reading up on it for the past couple of days trying to finds ways to make my aquaponics farm completely sustainable(as everyone else). I've searched and searched and found a couple guys from Georgia who are on youtube who are introducing a very recent rediscovery of using ancient chinese farming methods. They made an "incubator" that acts as a natural pond where the fish can get a somewhat complete source of food(basically duckweed, algae, microorganisms, and worms). If you want to read more of it go to bioponica.org.

They also found ways to increase nutrient strengths in aquaponics by adding worm compost tea bags and this biochar stuff to growing medium which supposed is enriched with potassium, magneisum, calcium, and phosphorus.

Anyways they sayed something about using biochar in their medium. I've read up on it...how to make it, how it lowers greenhouse gases, and what it does for plants. I can see how it is great for soil, but there is not much rich information for using it for aquaponics.

Has anyone used Biochar, not charcoal from hardware stores, in their medium? I know it has a high pH and am wondering if someone mixes it with some other medium to lower it. I'm going to use ebb & flow so i'm not worried about water saturation abilities this stuff has.
