I did a fishless cycle using beneficial bacteria and dosing with bottled ammonia. The cycle happened as normal and now the Nitrates and Nitrites are finally at 0ppm. However, for some reason after they both hit 0ppm my Ammonium went from 0ppm to around 1ppm. What's going on? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have dicided to put a spondias (hog plum) seed rather than gravel in my system. Is this seed good for the system as grow bed and what is the degradation rate of this seeds? Any alternatives of the gravel and hug plum for the grow bed?

Does anybody have any good sources for biochar that they like? Not interested in making it myself right now. I just need a small bag for a water filtration experiment.

the idea was for the students to be able to set up cheap systems in there home countries.

I would like some input on different types of media everyone has tried. what worked and what didn't. Things like charcoal, bottle caps, crushed bricks, ect. anything that can be made at home (like the charcoal) or saved from the dump (bricks, bottle caps, and the like).

yes I will use some river rock/creek gravel as well ( those are native in a lot of places), but the idea

here is cheap setups that can feed people in places were food is short and the whole "green" thing too.

I am going to set up some beds with each and maybe some layered ones as well. some with constant flow and some with flood and drain.

Hi,

My husband and I are establishing our first AP system. We are using the flood and drain method and our grow beds are two halves of a blue barrel. I am attaching pictures of what is going on with our media.

When the system is flooding, the media gets higher and higher since it's starting to float. Not too much, but enough that when the system is draining, the media shifts and we get a valley in the middle. I'm afraid that our plants will shift along with the media and become…

We were considering adding an inch or two of heavier media on top, but I wanted to check with you all to see if you had any advice or recommendations.
