I am an aquaponic farmer in NE Pennsylvania that has just started experiencing 100% fish mortalitiy, TWICE. I would like top talk through someone with more experience before I completely drain and sanitize my whole system. If that is a possibility, I would really, really appreciate it. This is not an ammonia or nitrite spike kind of issue. Those metrics are fine 0.25 and 0 respectively. DO is 6.4 ppm and pH is about 8, which I know is a little high but hardly enough to cause a problem…

Hi all,

I have already bought most of the equipment to build up my aquaponic system with Tilapia fish.

My question is about the fish tank size. My fish tank is 58 Gallon, and I'm not sure if this is fine or not, and how many Tilapia fish it will be able to hold? I was thinking of having five pairs of Tilapia fish (10 pcs). Is this a reasonable number?

Hello Folks,

We're considering doing a round of breeding before fall sets in and, before we do, we'd like to see how much interest there is in the fingerlings. We'll probably wait until spring if it looks like we'll have trouble placing them sooner. They're very healthy, pure strain, non-hybrid Blue Tilapia. We're not yet set up for shipping, so you'd have to pick them up at our location (southern Colorado). $1 per 1"-2" fingerling, any number.

Does anyone or has anyone tried to raise multiple fish species in their FT? What would be the cons for doing this? Any advice/direction on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I am totally new to this, but have been wanting to try it for a long time. I'm recently retired, and establishing a simple home system is on my retiree list. I've read the book (Aq Gardening) and THINK I'm about ready to build a simple, 2 barrel 1:1 type home system. I want to start small (size & investment wise) while learning, with a goal of going bigger once I have some experience.

I do not have consumption of the fish as a top priority, but rather the growing of organic greens & herbs. My wife is all excited about this if (capital IF) I can keep it organic.

Now...for the fish. I've read online all the arguments about what constitutes organic fish, the USDA position, etc. As I don't plan to consume the fish, I'd like to go with goldfish due to the lower cost. If I buy "normal" goldfish (think PetSmart) and feed them only organic feed, then would my plants be 'organic'? If not, then how do I get started with the fish?
