Hello,

I am new to aquaponics and really interested in starting my own system. I have taken Sylvia's and Alan's course on it and, having just finished, am ready to get it going.

I do, however, have a few questions and would greatly appreciate anyone's input on these:

Hello,

I am new to aquaponics and really interested in starting my own system. I have taken Sylvia's and Alan's course on it and, having just finished, am ready to get it going.

I do, however, have a few questions and would greatly appreciate anyone's input on these:

1. I live on the 14th floor of a decent-sized apartment and am thinking of a 40 gallon fish tank for a 6 cubic feet grow bed with a sump tank. The weight totals about 928 lbs. and would span over about 43 sq. ft. Does this sound reasonable or would it be too heavy?

2. I was wondering how exactly I would calculate the volume (and weight) of my grow bed. 6 cubic feet (1x2x3), according to the course, would require 300 lbs. of grow medium (using LECA). The course also said that 40% of that grow bed volume would be water and 60% grow medium. I am unsure of how exactly to calculate the volume of grow media then. Do I figure enough grow media to first fill the bed without water or do I take the volume of the container and fill the grow bed with 60% of grow medium and then let the water fill in the rest of the 40%?

3. How necessary is a sump tank for a system of this size? If so, would an 18 gallon sump tank be a reasonable size for this system.

Thank you so much. I greatly appreciate it.

Regards,

I am a research scientist and extension professional at Langston University in Oklahoma, a landgrant university. We have released a survey targeting aquaponics producers and hobbyists so that we can characterize the industry and determine what needs there are for research and for educational/extension materials. The survey was written with Oklahoma as its focus, however, if you are from another state or region, we would love for you to fill it out and just assume any questions that specifically state "Oklahoma" are for your location. We will be able to sort responses by location at the end of the study.

This is a really important survey, and it is kind of long, but if a few of you, especially those from Oklahoma, are able to complete it, it will go a long way to helping us help the industry thrive.
Feel free to copy this and share it with anyone who might be interested!!!!

I could use some advice in using Hyrdoton in Aquaponics. We have a 3' X 8' grow table and a 40 gallon fish tank. We plan on using the Hydroton that came with in a flood and drain system. We could use advice in how much of the Hydroton to put in the tank. Any other advice with using these clay pebbles would also be helpful.

Hi folks,

We almost have our system finished. Have a question for the more experienced out there. We will have 2 pumps. One to pump out of the sump and one pump out of the tank into a Polygyser Filter. While the pumps are the same size and model 1,800 gph what has us scratching our heads is 1.) how to regulate so that the flows are exactly the same (can we do this with valves) and 2.) how do we make sure that both stop if one goes down?

Has anyone else dealt with these guys recently and have discovered any effective means to deal with them while not harming plants or fish? I read somewhere that if someone tells you they don't have aphids in their greenhouse, they are lying! Advice online suggests soap in water, orange oil in water, neem oil, etc. but hoping someone has discovered an effective means for us aquaponics growers.
Tips and designtag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2018-02-04:4778851:Topic:6481832018-02-04T16:47:24.773ZAhmed Elomarhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/AhmedElomar

inside 1 green house of media bed, what is best Sqft growing space is recommended to utilize, and how many gallons of water is best used to ensure fish is not stressed and over stacked and nutrition is enough so plants will get enough nutrients too.

how to clean zipgrowtag:aquaponicgardening.ning.com,2017-07-19:4778851:Topic:6432872017-07-19T02:48:43.931Zjulianhttps://aquaponicgardening.ning.com/profile/julian

My question is how do you clean entangled roots in the matala or other media inside a zipgrow tower after harvest. Seems like a tedious job to me unless someone here had came up with a neat trick to do it.
