Event Description

There is an urgency to shift how we live in the world. Growing and sharing healthy, clean food while conserving resources is one way many people are choosing to adjust to the changeover. In direct response, aquaponics, the raising of fish and plants in a recirculating system, is currently at the forefront of sustainable agriculture practice. Ranging from small farms to large commercial-scale operations, aquaponic farm businesses are increasing in number globally each year.

The GrowHaus of Denver is hosting The Aquaponic Farming Course—four days of education for future farmers on how to successfully build and operate a viable commercial aquaponics business. Two separate sessions are offered—Feb. 15–18, and Feb. 20–23, 2014. The premier course is led by two of the industry’s most well-known farmers and instructors, Gina Cavaliero of Green Acre Aquaponics and JD Sawyer of Colorado Aquaponics. Students will learn to build, manage and operate the aquaponic system components integrated at The GrowHaus, a commercial aquaponic farm producing 20,000 lbs. of produce and 2,500 lbs. of fish a year for local restaurants and a neighborhood market, using media beds, deep water culture, vertical towers and wicking beds. Also offered is an aquaponic basics class Feb. 14 and 19.

THE EDUCATION

Graduates of The Aquaponic Farming Course advance with complete knowledge of what it takes to operate an aquaponic farm. They learn proven farm practices and standard procedures to help manage a successful farm business according to current industry food safety criteria. Additional essential course content educates students on how to create a business plan, how to market and sell farm products, how to promote a farm business in a socially connected world, and system design philosophy to create a flexible and nimble farm that successfully serves the ever-changing needs of customers.

Our team's mission is to offer future farmers the best chance possible at profitability and long term viability in aquaponic farming. We are proud of our reputation in the industry as being highly invested in the success of our students. That success is supported by a team of dedicated educators—real farmers—striving to offer the best, most complete aquaponic farming education the industry has to offer.
